很想知道这到底是虚构的小说还是真实发生过的事情。文章中的“我”实在太棒了。

嗯,比俺强得多。不服不行。

徐行《最准确的回答》An Impeccable Response

It was during the Japan-occupation. I was sixteen when I applied for a vocational school in Shengyang, China, run by the Japanese. The school was quite well-established and attracted many applicants each year. The acceptance ratio was very low. After passing a written test, the applicants were required to take an oral test. Nobody knew what would be asked in the oral test.

I went to the oral test. Many people similar to my age were waiting to be interviewed in a queue. When some applicants came out from the interview room, everybody naturally wanted to know what were the questions asked. Nobody made any queries though since it would appear inappropriate to know the questions. Quite a few applicants covered their face with a palm when they came out -- They were obviously in great pain. It made those wondering who were still waiting.

It was my turn. I entered the interview room. Three Japanese were sitting in a row, like some solemn statues. An elderly man about fifty year old was sitting in the middle, two middle-aged men on his two sides. One of them seemed to be a clerk-type, the other one a military-type. The military-type, who had a little mustache, might quite well be a Japanese military officer. The clerk-type looked friendlier yet still a tough interviewer nonetheless.

I marched in in big strides and stood in the middle of the room, my head high.

"Sit down!", said the elderly in the middle.

"Yes, sir." I sat straight up.

"Why do you want to attend this school?" he asked.

"I want to be a manager." The school specialized in training management personnel.

"But we trained employees, not managers."

"I will start as an employee."

"You sure you can be a manager?"

"Definitely."

"All right, quite an ambition."

"Nothing to do with ambitions. It is my goal." I refuted.

"Do you know what makes a manager?" he went on, ignoring my rebuttal.

"Yes, sir. A manager ought to be familiar with operational details of the unit, confident in dealing with people and willing to work hard." I read it in a book, three main qualities of a good manager.

"Not bad." He appeared to be satisfied with my answers and was addressing the other two interviewers.

They asked a few more questions before the little mustache suddenly shouted a command,

""A-ten-hut!"

"Yes, sir." I stood up.

"Two steps forwards!" He commanded.

I marched two steps forwards and stood upright in front of the three. The little mustache stood up and suddenly slapped me in my face hard.

"What does that feel like?" He growled.

I did try to guess what was going on earlier when I saw those people coming out who covered their faces with a palm. I was to some extent prepared but did not anticipate the question. At my wit's end, I struck back and slapped him in the face as hard as I could. My chin up high, I said with pride,

"That is how it feels like. sir!"

"Excellent!" The elderly gave a thumb up.

When I was back in the waiting area, I told about what happened to those who were still waiting. I was cheered. They even lifted me up and threw me up in air like crazy.

The test scores were posted later on. I was on the top. I got accepted.
